One of my favorite moments from “Anne of Green
Gables” is when Anne says to Marilla, “Isn't it nice to think that tomorrow is
a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”
I love it because it is such a simple thought, yet so profound when viewed in light of the pardon purchased for us by the blood of Christ. Many times we live in the shadows of guilt and shame from our sins and mistakes from the past instead of simply believing that, in Christ, we have been completely forgiven and set free. We allow sins from the past to drive a wedge between us and intimacy with Jesus.

I have seen that when
I allow the voice of guilt to whisper to my soul, I end up wallowing in defeat
and meditating on all that I’ve done wrong, which leads to an inward and
self-focused perspective and not a Christ-focused existence. However dark your
sins might be, there is not one too dark that it cannot be washed white as snow
by the blood of Jesus. As Christians, all our sins have been effectively dealt
with by the powerful and cleansing blood of Christ. He asks us not to meditate
on our shortcomings and sins, but to look unto Him and receive the forgiveness
that was made ours through His death.
The enemy would love to keep your mind
busy with reminders of all your past sins, but the truth is, if they have been
repented of, God is not mindful of them. In fact, He says in His Word that: “I
am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not
remember thy sins” (Isa. 43:25). And, in Hebrews 8:12: “For I will be merciful
toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more." Living a
sin-focused life is like trying to run a marathon with a 200-pound weight tied
around your waist. It only slows you down and ultimately completely stops you
from running. Yet, when we choose to fix our eyes on Christ, the Author and
Finisher of our faith, and reckon it true that “it is no longer we that live,
but Christ who lives in us” (Gal 2:20), we are enabled to run this race with
endurance and victory. Not by our own merit or good works, but by the perfect
life of Christ. Instead of allowing sin (or even the memory of sin) to “reign
in your mortal body” (Rom. 6:12), choose to think on things that are true,
lovely, pure, noble, praiseworthy and of good report (Phil. 4:8). Face each new
day with the truth that He has removed your sins as far as the east is from the
west (Ps. 103:12) and that today is a fresh new day, because your life has been
redeemed and ransomed by the sacrifice of Jesus!
