Thankful Heart

My friend Jolie and I were discussing hot flashes. I don't know how we got on that topic, but Jolie would mention later that she has hot flashes. I thought she was joking, so I responded, “Jolie, you are too young to be have hot flashes”. What she would share next surprised me.  Jolie shared that at the age of 18 she was diagnosed with Ovarian Failure.  She was devastated to learn she would never have children.  Jolie was married at the time of her diagnosis, but the harsh reality of never having children plagued her marriage.  Jolie began to believe her husband didn’t love her anymore.  In fact, she would often tell him he had stopped loving her.  The marriage ended in divorce after she discovered he had an affair.  Jolie attributes the demise of her marriage to her inability to cope with the pain of not having children. Jolie shared something only she and I and those who have experienced this can relate.   Jolie talked about dealing with the death of the dream of becom

A God Kind of Beauty

On any day or night, a young girl can be found before a mirror or an open diary asking: “Am I pretty?” Pretty  is a powerful word that has been the source of so much pain, and has led to many fractured hearts, minds, and relationships. According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, someone who is  pretty  is “pleasing by delicacy or grace; [has] conventionally accepted elements of beauty; and appear[s] or sound[s] pleasant or nice but lack[s] strength, force, manliness, purpose, or intensity.” The dictionary defines the word  beautiful  as a “quality…that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit.” So, prettiness is the shallowest and most conventional form of beauty, but beauty has an expansive meaning that can include exaltation of the mind or spirit. It is no wonder that the Bible portrays beauty as a transformational force that encompasses, but also extends beyond the senses to exude an internal sense of wellbeing, joy, and contentment.

Broken China

Young women today are turning away from the traditional form of femininity and embracing a more aggressive culture.   As a result we are witnessing a growing trend in the bad behavior of young women in the form of physical aggression. If you Google “girl fight” you will find very graphic videos of young women fist fighting, often over a boy.   The images are disturbing and even worse; fights are cheered on by ADULTS as well as friends.   On most occasions the girls are arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, but little is being done to resolve the issue.   It is a growing problem and is quickly escalating.   Although there are no real statistics as yet, experts say: 80 percent of school fights are female on female violence, a trend fueled by the internet. Videos on female violence can lead to cyber bullying as a way to torment one another The posting of violent female videos can somehow bring notoriety or fame CBSNEWS/2010 An interview by Psychologists Jennifer

What God Sees In You

Knowing how precious you are to your heavenly Father changes everything. I'm going to share something with you that not very many people—even my close friends—know about me: I'm a doll collector. I absolutely love dolls. Though I have some I have saved from the time I was a young girl, my interest in dolls has grown since my three children have advanced in age—perhaps because I miss having little ones around. Whatever the reason, the dolls are a great substitute: They're always pleasant to look at, they don't talk back and they're maintenance free! One doll I acquired recently is a particular favorite of mine. Designed to look like a toddler, she is dressed in what appears to be a Christian school uniform and comes with a book and a pair of eyeglasses. Though she has an Asian face and dark hair (I was born a blonde), she couldn't be a better representation of the person I see myself to be—a perpetual student who always has some type of reading material in
